The Race Online 2012 is Government campaign to get more people online by next year after shocking figures reveal 9 million people in the UK have never been online before.

The race, which aims to get millions of people using computers by the end of 2012, has managed to sign up over 100,000 ‘trusted friend’ volunteers, to aid them in their task.

Martha Lane is the digital champion spearheading the campaign, told the BBC the role of the volunteers will be simple, “to engage people with the joys of being on the internet” at a local level.

The campaign will target three major barriers that are believed to be keeping people offline; including access, motivation and skills. It’s hoped that today’s promising news of extra helpers will tackle these areas, providing support and advice on a local level. To combat the issue of finance, a range of cheap computers are being made available for as little as £95.

Martha went onto explain that being online has money saving benefits. Statistics have shown that those from low income households are already saving up to £270 per year, with higher income households saving £560 every year, through searching online and finding better deals.

Prime Minister, David Cameron commended Martha Lane for her work since launching her manifesto for a ‘Networked Nation’ in Downing street last July. He said they were encouraged by the progress she’s made already. And went on to add; “By supporting this vital campaign we really can become the first nation in the world to get everyone online and ensure that something the vast majority of us take for granted can be enjoyed by all of us.”

The main reason for any company to have an online presence is as a way of winning more business. In fact, far from being an optional extra, a good website design is now a mandatory requirement for many organisations if they even want to compete.

The internet dominates our way of life these days, meaning that a company that does not have an attractive, informative, relevant and easy to use website to communicate its message as a result of good web design is inevitably going to be much less effective.

Choose a web design agency like Micrositez, and you can have a website that attracts and engages your target users, helping to generate those all-important sales.

The whole point of web design for your company is to ensure that it wins you more business, converting a greater number of visitors into a greater number of enquiries. So not only do you want a website that is attractive, informative and easy to use in its own right, but you will also want one that has good SEO, being designed to perform well in the search engines ‘from the ground up’.
