MTV announced plans to release a new interactive app called Under The Thumb for iPhone and Android via Apple’s App Store, and Google’s Android Market, at the on-going Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona, yesterday.
Ben Jones, European director of technology at AKQA explains in more detail who the app is aimed at, and what they hope to achieve:
“They’re basically kids or people who live life at the pace of digital. They need to have content wherever they are, at any point, on any device… A lot of kids nowadays don’t necessarily watch TV anymore; they consume the majority of their [TV] content on their laptop, smartphone or tablet.”
The app will stream MTV’s shows on-demand, with an in-app chat feature for people to talk to friends about what they’re watching. There’s also something called “polymorphic interface control”, which turns Under the Thumb into a remote control app for a TV.
Expected date of release for the app is March, which MTV say will roll out across seven European countries, including:
The move will certainly add weight to the channel as the pressure upon global TV to stay relevant mounts.

Just days after the first anniversary of the Google Panda 3.2 update (the most talked-about algorithm update that we can think of) Google has confirmed that another Panda data refresh has occurred. Google has confirmed that “this launch refreshes data in the Panda system, making it more accurate and more sensitive to recent changes on the web.”
The Panda update is one of 40 changes made in February and announced yesterday by Google on their Inside Search blog. Normally, the monthly updates are announced some 7-10 days into the following month. It would appear that Google wants us to take notice of this set of changes.
The Panda refresh is the most crucial of all changes. Panda is now more thoroughly embedded in the search algorithm and much pickier than ever about content quality.
Another important (and somewhat cryptic) update concerns links. Google’s full disclosure is below:
Link evaluation. We often use characteristics of links to help us figure out the topic of a linked page. We have changed the way in which we evaluate links; in particular, we are turning off a method of link analysis that we used for several years. We often rearchitect or turn off parts of our scoring in order to keep our system maintainable, clean and understandable.
Not surprisingly, Google is unwilling to expand on this. But there is a strong possibility that changing a link evaluation tool could have some real impact on SEO, and the quality of links is likely to be given stronger weight than quantity. The full list of changes is available on the Inside Search blog.

This year’s Mobile World Congress is taking place in Barcelona. Starting today, and running until 1st March, the event is the largest mobile industry gathering in the world.
Here are some of the highlights that we mobile consumers can expect to see soon:
HTC
The popular manufacturer is launching a new line of “HTC One” phones. The most hotly anticipated is the HTC One X. Dubbed “the most impressive Android phone to date”, it boasts some impressive specs: 4.7″ 720p Super LCD2, Quad-core 1.5GHz Tegra 3 processor, 1GB RAM, and an 8 megapixel f2.0 camera with its own image processor.
Samsung
Samsung sold more smartphones than anyone else for most of 2011, and they’re hoping to capitalise on that with a new tablet: the Galaxy Tab 2. Available in 7” and 10.1” models, it’s the closest and biggest competitor to the iPad yet.
Nokia
Nokia are launching their budget windows & model, the Lumia 610, and also showing off the Pure View Phone, which has a gobsmacking 41-megapixel camera!
Skype
Existing Windows phone owners will welcome the launch of Skype in beta.
New, shiny, and impressive devices are also expected to be launched by LG, Huawei, and Panasonic.
One of the most anticipated appearances this year is from Facebook, who will be descending on MWC to announce their next move in mobile. It’s expected that the social network will be announcing integrated advertising to its mobile applications.

While the Windows 7 OS has been a relative success for Microsoft, Microsoft has been constantly working to make the next version of Windows bigger and better.
Last week, Microsoft released the early version of Windows 8 on a prototype tablet. Those of you who would like to try it and experience the all singing, all dancing Windows 8, you can download the Developer Preview, which is currently available in pre-beta version. This developer version shows is available for free download.
To compete with Apple, Windows has confirmed the introduction of a Windows Store, similar to Mac App Store, which allows users to browse through Windows applications, while developers can publish their Metro-style apps on Windows 8 devices.
Julie Larson-Green, Corporate Vice President of Windows has confidently declared that: “Everything that’s great about Windows 7, is better in Windows 8.”
Here are some of the most exciting expected features and benefits:
Windows Logon Screen
Unlike the traditional way of entering a password to unlock the screen, Windows 8 can be unlocked by just tapping on the right areas of the screen.
“Metro”
Completely re-styled user interface.
Sky Drive
This will allow users to access their digitally stored data via Windows 8 on their computers, laptops, mobile devices
Windows To Go
This will allow users to boot the OS from “Live USB”, a USB device which includes users’ programmes, settings and files. Windows To Go enables enterprise administrators to create USB drives containing complete, managed Windows images that users can use to boot and run Windows on any Windows 7 or Windows 8 capable computer, enabling employees to use a managed device whether in or out of the office.
Tablets
The first edition of Windows which will work on both ARM based tablets and traditional PCs based on ARM processors from AMD and Intel alike.
It is reported that Windows 8 is expected to have the same system requirements as Windows 7, and should run on existing machines that run Windows 7.
Microsoft is also expected to build Kinect sensors into next generation laptops. The sensors would be placed where the webcam is currently placed, and there could be an IR LED at the bottom of the screen. If Microsoft manages to drive the price of sensors down, it could even become a standard feature.
We can expect Windows 8 to be launched sometime in mid-late 2012. No official date has been given, but Microsoft have openly said that October 2012 is a possibility.

As SES London 2012 gets deep today, with the finish line in sight; it seems possible that this could be the reason for the spark in conversation circling the social web, and across twitter these past few days, over the future of SEO.
The conference activity online, which appears to have pushed SEO specialists and digital marketers into debate, raised two key topics of discussion, which we have summarised for you below:
An article by David Naylor, featuring in Clickz.com summed up one of his own sessions held at the conference this year, titled; “SEO is Dead.” David goes on to explain where the session title came from:
“As you probably know, the phrase on which it is based – “The King is dead. Long live the King” – dates from the Middle Ages. It signified the continuation of the monarchy: although the old king was dead, a new one would succeed him immediately. SEO is the same: it’s not dead; it has just taken new forms.”
Instructions take from Google’s; “Getting to grips with HTML5” presentation at SES London 2012, which was documented by Andrew R H Girdwood’s blog, laid out some of Google’s newest instructions for SEO in 2012. They are as follows:

Since the latest Panda “data refresh”, digital marketers have noted that Google+ and the +1 button are a force to be reckoned with in SEO.
Mashable’s Keith Kaplan has written today about the potential importance of the +1 button, and the effect it could indirectly have on search engine optimisation.
His article clarifies that the +1 button contributes to the creation of a wider social graph, allowing Google to track relevancy through social media traction. In Conversation Marketing, a recent blog also noted that sites with more +1 ratings tend to show higher in SERPs, even though it is not officially a ranking factor.
Because the +1 button works in many ways like a stamp of approval, the higher the number of +1s a site has, the more likely it is that the site will have a high click-through rate. The higher the click-through rate, the more likely it is that the page will be shared on Facebook and Twitter. An experiment by Rand Fishkin (SEOMoz) recently showed that social shares were creating higher rankings. So, in an indirect but possibly meaningful way, +1 can affect SEO.
The feature is still very new, and Google themselves are proceeding with caution, saying: “For +1′s, as with any new ranking signal, we are starting carefully and learning how those signals affect search quality.”

You might think that Facebook and Twitter are all the social network you might need, but there continues to be a rise in niche and specialist social networks.
The unexpected and stratospheric rise of Pinterest has shown that there is still plenty of room for the competition in social, and its popularity for recipes and how-to guides has gained the new network a real following among a certain demographic. Here are some more niche social networks that serve special interests:
Foodspotting
A site for users to find and recommend not just restaurants, but individual dishes. The intuitive visual layout on Foodspotting’s mobile apps has led to massive growth among smartphone users, keen to share photos of the latest treats they consume.
Yelp
At first glance, Yelp looks like a review site. But by allowing members of the Yelp community to rate, “compliment” and mark other reviews as “cool”, “funny” or “useful” this network encourages a community feel.
43 Things
This is a very new, and very fast growing site based on users sharing commitment to making changes in their lives. From small goals (paint my toenails) to larger aims (fall in love; write a book) the community encourages each other to achieve their new aims and stick to their commitments.
Fitocracy
This is another brand new network, which aims to make fitness fun by turning it into a game. Users can compete with each other, build up high scores and unlock achievements by trying our special and crowdsourced challenges; a great new example of social gaming.
There are literally hundreds of other networks, with interests ranging from pets, to gaming, to dating, and much more. Which are your favourite and why?

More and more people are using smartphones instead of PC for browsing, gaming, online banking and social media. We thought we should share some easy tips to help keep your smartphone safe and keep you secure while you use your shiny mobile device.
1. Pin, Password and Pattern
Whether you use an Android, iOS, Windows Phone or BlackBerry handset, you will have the option to protect it with a PIN number, a password, or even a pattern (on Android phones). This seems like obvious and simple advice, but a recent survey by Confident Technologies confirmed that 44% of smartphone users don’t use these locking tools. Make sure you add a pin or password to your device; it’s the single most effective way to ensure no one can pick up your phone and access your information.
2. Be App Aware
A security researcher who posts on Reddit under the pseudonym Lampolo recently disclosed that he was able to find over 50 apps on Android market which were infected with malware. Android phones are particularly vulnerable to this type of attack because of the open nature of Android Market. Before you download any Apps to your smartphone, stop and think:
If in doubt – don’t download it.
3. Don’t Jailbreak – those bars are there for a reason
The Apple App Store is notoriously fussy about which Apps they sell, and iOS devices are as secure and locked-down as you can get in a smartphone. If you feel restricted by this it can be tempting to hack or “jailbreak” your iPhone. Don’t.
Not only does this make your device more vulnerable, it may stop the device from working altogether if there is a software update. Not to mention, your warranty will be invalid and they good people at Apple won’t replace it the phone subsequently packs in.
4. Read your bill
In the age of direct debit and e-billing, a lot of users ignore their bills when they land in the inbox each month. Checking your bill can help you to pick up on unexplained call or data charges, which may be coming from an App which is already installed on your device. If you have unexplained charges, call your service provider and they can help track down the culprit.
5. Antivirus and Secure Folders
There are some great antivirus and malware detection programmes available. Our favourite for Android is Lookout Security and Antivirus – find it on Android Market.
Another handy feature is a secure folder. On iOS we like “My Folder”, a secure PIN- protected App which allows you to store bookmarks, notes, contacts, and even photos and videos away from prying eyes.
Remember, if your phone is lost or stolen, you can also wipe the device remotely. Lifehacker published some helpful links to easy video tutorials to use if you ever need to.
If you know any more tips and tricks, share them with us on our Micrositez Facebook and Micrositez twitter pages.

Living up to their tagline, ‘think different’ Apple released a preview version of their latest OS update today, titled OS X Mountain Lion.
Mountain Lion is the latest update since OS X Snow Leopard. The new update brings some of the best elements from iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch together, and integrates them across all Apple devices. Their idea that each user should have the same user experience regardless of device clearly remains top of Apple’s priorities.
Apple’s Chief Executive, Time Cook told the Wall Street Journal; “We see that people are in love with a lot of the apps and functionality here. So, anywhere where it makes sense, we are going to move that over to Mac.”
Today’s update comes with a whole host of welcome additions. Including:
It’s clear Apple is in tune with the latest online trends. The increase in user participation in social gaming, social apps and the move towards the cloud is becoming a prominent part of both business, and individual lives, online.
Apple now holds over 100 million iCloud accounts, and although this latest version will remain in the hands of developers, as a preview. The new software is expected to be released to the public, this summer.
According to an interview with Fortune Magazine, CEO Tim Cook revealed the company had sold more iOS devices last year, than its entire history. On that basis, we only predict a bright future for OS X Mountain Lion and any of its future updates.
What do you think? We’d love to hear your thoughts, comments here, here, or here.

December 2011 seemed to be the month of change for social networks, with StumbleUpon, Twitter, YouTube and a host of other networks shedding their designs of 2011, and entering the New Year with a new set of ideas, and ways that would carry them into the New Year with a fresh new look.
As most of us will have discovered with the new Facebook timeline, these things take time to reach the whole world. Although Facebook are still rolling out their updates, Twitter has no finished updating our new profiles from looking like this:
To something that looks like this:
Twitter did provide an option to switch over early for some users, but as of today every account holder will now see the new design. We liked what Harrison Weber from the TNW East Coast and Design Editor had to say about the new design when he said;
“Twitter’s redesign turns their website into a true app experience, with smart curves, effortless photo and video viewing, sharp icons, and generous white space. It’s not intrusive, or difficult to navigate like a Facebook redesign. It’s all really a fresh breath of air.”
What do you think of Twitters new look? Thumbs up, or thumbs down? Have your say, and share your thoughts right here,or here.

MySpace’s recent change in management and strategic direction could be paying off, as the former social media giant announced that they have gained 1 million new users since December 2011. This is the first growth in users since MySpace was acquired by Specific Media, with the help of some serious investment from megastar Justin Timberlake, in June 2011.
This turnaround in fortune has been credited to the complete change in direction that the company has taken. MySpace CEO Tim Vanderhook summed up the new approach yesterday as he released a statement on the company’s new-found success. He said: “MySpace is building meaningful social entertainment experience around content, where consumers can share and discover the music they love. Consumers are getting excited about MySpace again – a testament to a great music product.”
MySpace touts the largest catalogue of free music for streaming in the world (42 million songs compared to Spotify’s 14 million) and the MySpace Music Player as key to their success. MySpace can also now be integrated with twitter, and even Facebook, opening up engagement opportunities with their 800 million users. Some of the upsurge in MySpace users has been credited to this Facebook integration, meaning that Mark Zuckerberg’s site is actually directing traffic to its old rival.
While it is true that MySpace has a long way to go before they can reach their peak in 2008 of 73.6 million users, their new strategy puts them firmly in position to re-establish themselves as real contenders.

Google’s Valentine’s day doodle is a big hit this year. The short video, showing a tale of the unrequited love that a cartoon boy has for a skipping girl, is complemented by Tony Bennett crooning “Cold, Cold, Heart”.
Have a look yourself to see what’s setting Googlers hearts-a-flutter:
Not to be left out of the Valentines love-in, Facebook conducted an experiment to soundtrack our love lives. The social network has gathered data on over two million users who changed their relationship statuses, and compiled a list of the top ten songs people listen to after a make up or break up. The songs were compiled among US users using Spotify with Facebook. For brevity, we’ve listed the top 5 in each category below:
Songs people listen to when entering into a relationship:
1. “Don’t Wanna Go Home” by Jason Derulo
2. “Love On Top” by Beyoncé
3. “How to Love” by Lil Wayne
4. “Just The Way You Are” by Bruno Mars
5. “Good Feeling” by Flo Rida
Songs listened by people after ending a relationship:
1. “The Cave” by Mumford and Sons
2. “Crew Love” by Drake
3. “All of the Lights” by Kanye West
4. “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele
5. “Take Care” by Drake
Some people who might not receive much affection from St. Valentine this year are online retailers. Valentines day spending is reported to have increased across the board, and the National Retail Federation survey reported that people are planning to spend 8.5% more than last year, but this hasn’t translated to bigger online sales. While Christmas saw an online spending boom, bricks and mortar stores tend to reap the benefits of cupid’s bow.
Is that because more than a few people leave their romantic purchases to the last minute? We wouldn’t dare suggest it!

To some people, social media has already become a natural form of communication; as ubiquitous as the telephone or face-to-face conversation. According to an in-depth report from comScore, social media is still only in its infancy, and has plenty of room to grow.
New services and platforms are emerging and gaining large user sets rapidly, and comScore believes that social sites and hubs are on track to become the most time-consuming online activity at some point in 2012. Over 16% of all time spent online is spent on social websites. The big story is not in user increases, but in the amount of time people are spending online, user engagement with Facebook alone jumped 32%.
The average minutes per visitor for selected social media sites is outlined below:
The big success story of late 2011 is still Pinterest, who reached over 8 million unique visitors without the marketing clout of Google, whose Google+ endeavour reached 20.7 unique US visitors.
As social flourishes, instant messaging and webmail have seen tangible declines. Among users aged 18-24, webmail usage has dropped by 34%. This was surpassed by the decline in instant messaging, which has plummeted by 40% in just one year.
The evidence is mounting that the future of the internet is social. If you haven’t established your presence yet speak to our social media strategists about how social media can take your digital marketing strategy to the next level.

The nation’s number on search engine seems to be making its way into a new market. No, it’s not another social media network this time. Google+ seems to be doing well considering its completion; although, Google’s Search Your World is certainly helping them in the social sphere.
This time Google are moving towards music. In essence, the search engine of many hats is thought to be building a new music streaming system that will be controlled by Android smartphones.
The company announced their intentions to enter the market of home entertainment last May, and the product, which is expect to be a device stamped with the Google logo.
Their concept will tie both the new streaming system and device together, and will be looking to win the hearts of music lovers via its competitive pricing strategy with other high-end retailers.
Well you can’t blame them for giving it a go! Watch this space.

Google has announced that it has launched a beta version of its popular Chrome browser for mobile. The browser is now available for on Android handsets running the latest Ice Cream Sandwich OS. Google announced this with some fanfare, touting seamless integration with Chrome desktop tabs and favourites. The official video is below:
February has already been a big month for mobile. Data released on Friday by Canalsys revealed that – for the first time – smartphone sales have overtaken PC sales. In the USA, during Q4 2011, 158.5million smartphones were shipped compared with 120.2million PCs – and those PC sales take tablet sales into account too. These massive smartphones sales were partly driven by the overwhelming success of the iPhone in Q4.
Apps have become so ubiquitous that they are driving economic growth. A recent survey by TechNet suggests that over 466,000 jobs have been created in the US economy since 2007 to keep up with the demand for smartphone applications.
At the Inside Social Apps 2012 conference (yes, apps even have their own conference now) Facebook confirmed that they are keen to encourage developers to create social mobile apps on Open Graph. It was confirmed last week that their strategy for advertising will take more account of mobile, and Facebook mobile app ads could be live as early as March.
Are smartphones the new PC? Do you use your smartphone more than your PC already, or are you reluctant to invest in this technology?

Traditionally worn in the Carnivale (or Carnival of Venice) Venetian Masks have seen a recent resurgence in popularity. Originally devised to hide the wearer’s identity and social status, they allowed ball attendees to behave in out-of-the-ordinary ways. Party goers would create fancy designs and patterns to stand out in the crowd, and adorn their masks with decorations.
Now, Venetian and Masquerade masks are used at fancy dress parties and themed balls, where traditional costumes and baroque decorations are employed to make any event more lavish. Far from being a cloak, masks are now a real talking point at any social occasion.
Micrositez Digital is pleased to continue their work with Just Posh Masks: the UK’s premier stockists of Venetian Masks and masquerade masks for any occasion. The New York Giants won Super Bowl XLVI in a 21-17 nail-biter against the New England Patriots, but some of the biggest plays and most impressive wins on Sunday were off the field.
The event was the most watched television programme in history, with an average of 111.3 million Americans tuning in. Viewing peaked for the final quarter (117.7 million viewers) and Madonna’s halftime show (114 million viewers). Not content with dominating TV viewing, the Super Bowl took over Google too. The top trending topics on Google search during the game were:
1. Madonna
2. Halftime show
3. Patriots
4. Tom Brady
5. Giants
Madonna’s halftime show was a hit on twitter too. The performance generated over 10,245 tweets per second, placing it third in the tweet-per-second record books. It was beaten later in the game, peaking at 12,233 tweets per second in the closing minutes of the game, after the Giants scored what turned out to be the winning touchdown with 57 minutes left on the clock.
As for the winning touchdown; it’s gone viral. A gif of the unusual endzone manoeuvre has been making the rounds on Facebook and twitter.
Super Bowl is a bumper time for advertisers in the US, with 30-second ad slots selling for an average of $3.5million. This year, more than ever, brands have been taking their ad campaigns to youtube in advance. Chevrolet took social involvement to another level, by inviting people to view up to 40 crowdsourced videos, and opting to use the most shared one on the day. Doritos have been using this trick for a while now, and ask fans to submit their own Doritos clips. The high level of fan engagement meant that 8 of the top 20 most shared ads of the 2012 campaign were for Doritos. Here’s our favourite:
